You Want to Be Happy? You Better Believe It!

I spend a good amount of time pondering human nature and how we think… what motivates us… what makes us tick?

One thing is for sure… we all share a common desire to be happy. Although most of us have a pretty good idea of what turns us on, very few have really figured out how to take it to the next level and milk it for all it’s worth.

But I do know a few… and this is what I’m learning.

There are several people in my life who always… and I mean always, seem to be happy. Let me put it this way… if they’re not, you’d never know it. They radiate joy wherever they go… and believe you me… just being in their presence is uplifting.

Radiate Joy

Although their outlook is awe inspiring, it’s very difficult to fathom. Do they have some sort of a special happy gene… or what? What do they possess that others lack?

I’m fascinated by the fact that these folks easily find joy everywhere they turn, while others, walking the same path, can’t seem to get a glimpse? They view challenges as opportunities, where others only see obstacles? Not only is their glass half full, but it remains that way, all the while they are chugging.

I know this to be true because I’m married to one of these people. It’s all about believing with this girl. She believes she is happy… therefore, she is… and if she’s not, she soon will be. She just has too many reasons to be, and has chosen not to miss out on any… period, amen.

Over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that happiness really is a choice. Those who choose just flat out refuse to participate in any other manner. They’ve learned to choke out negativity. They wake up each morning confidently believing their day will be good… therefore, more times than not… that’s exactly what happens.

They actively search for the good in everything they see and do… and by doing so, they attract it to themselves, as well as to everyone lucky enough to be in their presence.

The upside for me is… I’ve been living with this woman for 38 plus years, and I believe she’s starting to rub off on me just a bit. I now realize when I’m present enough to consciously choose… it works every time. You see… the moment I begin to expect to find joyfulness, I begin tripping over it everywhere I step. It’s a wonderful awakening!

To be happy

Look… life’s abundances are vast and magnificent…in fact, they’re so numerous, it’s difficult to see the trees for the forest. After years of not noticing, many foolishly begin believing these blessings don’t even exist. And the truth is…whatever we believe, becomes our reality.

Here’s one of life’s catch 22’s. Some of life’s golden nuggets are so wonderful, many believe they are not worthy to receive them. I’ve actually heard people say… I could never have that…or I couldn’t do that… it’s easy for him, but not for me… I was never blessed with the willpower she has. Hey, snap out of it! This way of thinking puts you on the fast track of fulfilling your belief.

The trouble with believing is… it works.

In other words…you say you want to be happy? You better believe it!

Believe… what a powerful verb. The mere thought of it begins the process. To believe is to attract… whatever it is you believe.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned on the subject of happiness, other than watching my wife, came from a passage in the book, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill. He states… in order to attract whatever it is you want from life, you begin by living and thinking as if you already have it. In other words… you believe it.

In my experiences, the moment I decide to believe something, everything changes. It’s as if I am suddenly drawn down the path of least resistance, where roadblocks simply disappear and excuses dissipate. With this brings a newfound confidence which builds momentum…and there’s no looking back.

As a young child, I didn’t come out of the gate overflowing with confidence. As my dad would see me struggle through situations, or maybe throwing in the towel a little too early, he would sit me down and say, “Son…you got to believe in yourself. No one else can do that for you… if you don’t make it happen… it won’t.”

For a parent of a child with little or no self-confidence, trying to teach this most valuable life lesson is absolutely heart wrenching. The paradox is… you love them so much, you would literally do anything and everything for them, but you know if you do, it will dramatically lessen their chances of figuring things out for themselves.

Gutting out this task separates the heart from the chest… and it hurts like hell. Dad… if you can hear me… I didn’t know it then, but I do now… thank you!

As a parent, I have added a couple more prerequisites for my kids. You have to know what you want… and, you must believe you can have it. Then, well… it just depends on how much you believe it.

Everything is real… happiness, sadness, love, hate, good, evil, God, Devil, optimism, pessimism, abundance, scarcity… everything… you name it. Whatever you’re drawn to, you will have.

Your destination will absolutely be where you choose to spend your time and efforts believing.
You might say… Bill… how can you believe all of this?
I choose to.

Another great entry! And so true. I find myself doing that, especially in the morning as I arrive to work. As I drive to work, i get more and more anxious as I get closer, just thinking about what’s going to happen that day. I turn on soothing music to keep those feelings away. Once I get there and get settled, sometimes, I sit for a minute and make the conscious decision to be in a good mood, to keep calm, and it does just happen, once I make the decision. Thank you for your wisdom.

in addition to my previous entry…..I not only get calm, but I actually feel happy to be there (at work). And that saying “happy to be here” feels true and real.

Please... share a couple words
